There is a right way and a wrong way to do just about anything!

Your home HVAC System (Heating, Ventilating, Air Conditioning) is no exception. When the time comes to replace a homes heating and cooling system many homeowners panic and quickly replace their existing equipment with similar equipment, missing an incredible opportunity to improve the most essential component in making their home comfortable, healthy and energy efficient.

Replacing equipment without considering what improvements have been made over the years such as new windows, insulation, or air sealing can result in having a system installed that is grossly oversized. This can cause a whole host of problems including higher initial cost, and higher utility bills, poor moisture control and uncomfortable rooms.

We often see homes that have been added on to, and in the process ductwork has been added to the existing system to heat and cool the addition. This approach can result in an undersized unit that can’t keep the home comfortable in extreme weather conditions. Replacing this equipment with equipment of the same size can cause higher utility bills and shorter equipment life along with just not being able to keep up on the hottest or coldest days.

So what is the right way?

Most homeowners are not happy with the comfort level of their homes, and do not realize that it can be enhanced. If you are considering upgrading your current system we recommend that you take time to consider anything you like or dislike about you current system. Do you have hot and cold rooms in the home, is the system too noisy, are energy bills high. This is a decision you will live with for a long time and there are many options to consider.

Once you have your wish list together, A Design Air Comfort Consultant will show you options that meet your needs, choices may include Gas Furnaces, Electric Heat Pumps or Hybrid Systems which combine the two, we will help you understand the efficiencies that are available and calculate savings. We realize that replacing an HVAC system is not something you do very often. Our Goal is to simplify the process and help you come to a decision you will be comfortable with for many years to come.

Proper Sizing

To determine the proper size of the equipment to be installed we submit an ACCA (Air Conditioning Contractors of America) “Manual J” load calculation, the industry standard for determining the number of BTU's needed to properly heat and cool your home. Using Manual J, we calculate heat loss from the house through walls, ceilings and leaky ductwork, and infiltration through windows, doors and other penetrations," "Manual J also helps calculate heat gain into the house from sunlight; people; lights and appliances; doors; walls; and windows."

Most of the information needed for sizing cooling loads can be taken directly from house plans. Essential information includes solar gain, which is a function of window area; orientation of the house; window type and glazing (such as Low-E, low solar heat gain coefficient, gas-filled); shading from landscaping and building overhangs; and shingle and siding type and color, levels of insulation and the air infiltration rate. There are currently only 5 ACCA approved software programs available. If you working with a contractor and he cannot name the program he uses beware! Design Air uses Wright Soft, the industry leader.

Manual J load Calculations cost between $150 and $300 however we include them free of charge with any new system.

Our services include HVAC repairs and installation, Energy Audits, Heating contractor services, Air Conditioning contractor services, Indoor air quality testing and Zoning services.
