How Important Are Heating Tune-Ups
Fall has officially arrived which means it’s time cooler air, sweaters, pumpkins, and, of course home maintenance. In the months before winter gets into full swing, you should be preparing your home for the often harsh weather that we can get in Cleveland and the surrounding areas. One of the most important things you can do to prepare your home is to take care of your heating system.
When the colder weather of winter is in full swing, making sure that your heating unit is able to provide you and your family comfort and warmth is a major priority. At Design Air Heating & Cooling, our Cleveland heating contractors recommend that you have your heating unit tuned up once every year, preferably in the fall, to ensure that it’s able to run as efficiently as possible, with as few problems as possible, throughout the winter.
Many homeowners, however, are unaware of just how important proper maintenance of your heating system can be. Here are a few of the questions that homeowners commonly have about heating maintenance and tune-ups:
Is It Really Necessary to Have Tune-Ups Annually?
Annual tune-ups are really a part of preventative maintenance, and even if you don’t notice any problems with your heating system, tune-ups can prevent any unexpected problems from cropping up when you’re using your heater the most. While you won’t necessarily experience major problems with your Cleveland home’s heater if you don’t have a tune-up, preventative maintenance is much less of a hassle than emergency repairs.
It’s also worth noting that all furnace manufacturers recommend that you have annual inspection performed by a qualified technician. Furnaces that don’t receive annual service will probably not be covered under warranty if any damage occurs.
What Do Technicians Actually Do During a Tune-Up?
The actual service that your furnace or other heating unit will receive during a tune-up depends largely on the contractor that you call. However, any qualified heating contractor will know what needs to be done to your heating unit annually. Our heating contractors will perform the following steps when you hire us for a heating tune-up at your Cleveland home;
- Adjust operating pressures
- Clean and adjust burner assembly
- Lubricate all moving parts
- Cleans heat exchanger and elements
- Clean or replace air filters (this should be done more than once a year)
- Check gas supply for leaks
- Measure temperature changes
- Monitor flue draft
- And more
Could a Homeowner Do This Job On Their Own?
Of course, it’s possible for a homeowner to do this job on their own. But most homeowners who have the knowledge and experience to complete these tasks also happen to be heating contractors. Without proper knowledge and experience, you won’t be doing your Cleveland home any favors by attempting to tune up your own furnace, and because your heating system is so important to your home, you need to know that you’re getting excellent work.
